About Ritu Raj

A Contemporary Abstract Artist with a Unique Vision

An older man with a shaved head and gray beard sitting on an orange padded stool in front of large abstract paintings, wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans with paint splatters, and colorful patterned sneakers, crossing his arms and looking at the camera.

I’m Ritu Raj, a contemporary abstract artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. After a successful career as a tech entrepreneur, I returned to my first passion — making art. My work explores innovation, movement, and design through bold, original abstractions, including the signature Organic Movement series, created using a proprietary thread painting technique. Each piece is crafted as an investment-grade work of art for modern collectors.

The Organic Movement Series

Innovative Abstract Art Techniques

Commission 1-of-1 Piece
  • Abstract painting with dominant green and white brushstrokes creating leaf-like patterns.

    original technique

My Organic Movement series represents a distinctly original technique I’ve developed: thread painting. Each work in the series is created by combining layers of oil or acrylic paint with carefully positioned threads, pulled, dragged, or suspended across the canvas to create intricate gestures and physical texture.

  • An abstract painting with swirling blue and white brushstrokes forming a dynamic, textured pattern.

    capturing movement

Carefully positioned threads, pulled, dragged, or suspended across the canvas to create intricate gestures and physical texture. Capturing movement in a way that feels both intentional and alive.

  • Close-up of an abstract red and orange painted surface with textured brushstrokes and overlapping layers.

    proprietary technique

No other artist is currently working with this exact process. The results are bold, dynamic, and texturally rich, with each piece offering a sense of depth and energy that shifts with light and perspective.

  • Abstract painting with large sweeping white, pink, and orange brushstrokes on a dark background.

    highly collectible

These paintings are not only one-of-a-kind; they mark a new approach in contemporary abstraction, making them both visually arresting and highly collectible.

Studio Journal: Reflections in Abstraction

Commission Your Own
  • My work bridges Indian modernism, global abstraction, and experimental techniques. Collectors are drawn to the way I combine historical legacies (Souza, Rothko, Basquiat) with innovations like string-based painting and CNC-sculpted wood panels. Each piece reflects themes of migration, identity, and transformation, making it both timeless and rooted in today’s world.

  • I am based in Phoenix, Arizona, and regularly participate in exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally. My work has been shown in galleries and is available by appointment in my studio. Upcoming shows and events are announced on my Exhibitions page.

  • Collectors can acquire works directly through my website or by contacting me. I also accept commissions, where I work closely with collectors and gallerists to create site-specific or collection-focused pieces. Please reach out via Contact for details.

  • I often paint using string instead of brushes, creating dynamic lines that balance control and chance. Many works are also created on CNC-molded wood panels, where the carved surface adds depth and shadow. This makes each painting not only visual but tactile, bridging painting and sculpture.

  • Yes. Collaboration with gallerists and curators is a central part of my practice. I provide high-quality photography, detailed catalogs, and thematic curatorial support to ensure exhibitions tell a strong story.

  • Icreate works ranging from small studies (12x12 inches) to large-scale canvases and wood panels (6–10 feet). Many collectors acquire smaller works as entry points, while museums and galleries often showcase larger immersive pieces.

  • All works are professionally packed and shipped worldwide. Large-scale works are crated for secure transit. I also work with specialized art shippers for international deliveries.

  • My paintings are in dialogue with both Indian modernists (F.N. Souza, M.F. Husain, J. Swaminathan) and Western abstractionists (Rothko, Newman, Pollock, Richter). Collectors and gallerists often situate my work as a continuation of this lineage, while recognizing the originality of my techniques.

  • While art collecting should always be about passion first, many collectors value the way my works combine historical depth, innovative practice, and international perspective. As abstraction continues to evolve, works that bridge tradition and experimentation are seen as especially significant.

  • I welcome conversations about curatorial partnerships, residencies, and collector studio visits. To receive updates on new works, exhibitions, and collector insights, sign up for my Collector’s Newsletter.

For Collectors & Gallerists

This page is designed specifically for art collectors, curators, and gallerists interested in learning more about my practice. My work is rooted in the legacies of Indian modernism and Western abstraction, while also pushing boundaries through unconventional methods such as painting with string and creating textured surfaces on CNC-molded wood panels.
