Out of Darkness: A Journey of Light and Form

“There’s something about black. You feel hidden away in it.” –Georgia O’Keeffe

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” –Leonard Cohen

My “Out of Darkness” series is a testament to the transformative power of contemporary abstract art, exploring the dynamic interplay between darkness and light, color, and form. My creative process begins with a foundation of vibrant abstraction, achieved through bold techniques like expressive brushwork or coating the canvas in luminous gold spray paint. Once this initial layer sets, I overlay it with a rich black oil paint mixed with a fast-drying alkyd medium. The moment of transformation happens when I spontaneously rake through the dark surface, allowing the vivid colors beneath to emerge in unexpected ways.

While black dominates the compositions, the artworks radiate a profound sense of transcendence and optimism. The series conveys a meaningful message: even in the depths of darkness, light and beauty have the power to break through. Through the use of texture and contrast, I aim to push the boundaries of contemporary abstract art, creating pieces that resonate emotionally and visually.

With “Out of Darkness,” I invite you to explore the duality of despair and hope, reminding us that light endures even in life’s shadowed moments. This series is not just about technical exploration but also about evoking introspection and renewal through the expressive potential of abstract art.
